Comprehensive Postgraduate CME programme for Surgeons

Welcome to the premier Postgraduate teaching programme of India.

“Surgery Update” started in 1984, and has been held every year since then. It has evolved over the years to its present avatar.

The programme is designed to provide a mix of theory lectures and practical case taking tips. Since the target audience is PG surgery residents, esoteric and rare topics are avoided; topics are selected to cover the essentials. We aim to cover the entire course over 3 years.

All presentations and classes are by faculty from various teaching institutions, experienced in postgraduate teaching and examination.

It is a credit to the individual authors that the ‘Proceedings’ have become one of the most sought after ‘books’ for the Surgery Postgraduate. A limited number is printed during the annual Surgery Update for all delegates and invited faculty. A few are presented to Medical Libraries. That is why we are unable to provide a copy after the Surgery Update finishes – we do not have copies left over. It is encouraging to see a copy in Departmental libraries of Medical Colleges and Hospitals all over India.

The “Proceedings of the Surgery Update” was conceptualised and formalised by Dr AK Sarda, who is credited with elevating Surgery Update to its present position. He designed the cover and layout of the articles. Delegates commented that reading a 300 + page book was more convenient with a spiral binding, so we implemented it for all editions. Full text pdfs of past Proceedings (except last 3 years) are now available.

Surgery Update is NOT a replacement for regular postgraduate teaching. In fact, you would appreciate the content most if you have read the topic before coming for the Update. Come prepared, and ask questions! There is no silly question; this will be the time for you to clarify all your doubts. Medicine is not black & white; experienced faculty will help you in understanding the concepts, and guide you regarding the accepted answers during exam vivas.

Surgery Update is not a conference or CME in the conventional sense of the word. Delegates are expected to behave as they would in a class. Please refer to the Do’s and Dont’s for more information.
